Co-Owner, Krav Maga SF

My name is Gail Foland, co-owner of Krav Maga SF. I was a member of The Alternative Board, a peer business advisory board service for approximately 3 years. During my time there I encountered many business challenges that were discussed at our board meetings, from how to survive the economic downturn to marketing and operations.

Each month I could bring my business issues to discuss with other business owners on my board. The feedback, suggestions, and ideas generated were extremely helpful in resolving many of the challenges we faced. The ability to receive feedback and input from 7 or 8 other business owners not only helped me with my immediate issues but by listening to others and how they addressed their own challenges added a depth of value that was unexpected.

Owner, Marvel Maids Cleaning Service

I joined The Alternative Board, operated by Ken Nangle (currently with Knownleader) and remained a member for over 3 years. During my time on my board, I received advice from a variety of business owners on a very wide variety of issues. I had recently acquired the business, so the feedback and growth that followed were invaluable.

Each meeting provided insights and ideas that were useful in my business from lawyers, CPA's and other small business owners. The board process was very useful in helping me think about and get organized to grow my business.

I strongly recommend this process for any business owner interested in improving their business.

Salesforce Developer Mentor

I was a member of The Alternative Board, facilitated by Ken Nangle, for approximately 5 years. During that time, I was transitioning from one line of business to another - custom programming to programmer training. The members of my board were very encouraging and welcoming and contributed to my thinking in a very supportive environment.

While I completed my transition to full-time programmer training after leaving the board, the continuous support, encouragement, and suggestions made by other board members were very valuable to me and I have continued to benefit from many of the things I learned and the mindset that was formed during my time on the board.

Retired Educational Counselor

My name is Jane McClure, formerly one of the owners of the San Francisco Educational Consulting practice known at that time as McClure, Mallory & Baron, now called Mallory, Baron, Ross & Kindler. I was a member of The Alternative Board, a peer business advisory board company for approximately three years.

During my time at The Alternative Board, I participated in monthly meetings with seven other business owners. We discussed many business issues, including human resources, management, and strategic planning. At the time I joined, my firm was struggling to create a compensation system that was deemed fair by all. With the help of the members of The Alternative Board and Ken Nangle, the facilitator, we were able to accomplish that, to the satisfaction of everyone. Later when I decided to retire, with the help of the board I was able to successfully address my exit plan. The members of the board were very helpful, encouraging and creative, resulting in the successful sale of my part of the practice in 2011.

I confidently recommend that any small business owner interested in finding solutions to business management, business process improvement, help with day-to-day business issues, as well as how to achieve work/life balance, consider membership in a peer business advisory board. I am grateful for the help and advice I received from my colleagues on The Alternative Board, and I also found it very satisfying to be helpful to others as they, too, worked toward finding solutions to their business problems.

I was a member of The Alternative Board, a peer business advisory group operated by Ken Nangle in San Francisco. My tenure at The Alternative Board spanned 9 years during which I participated in monthly meetings with 8 other business owners. At the meetings, we discuss business issues about operating my business and the businesses of others. I was able to learn by helping others and receiving help from others during these meetings.
